Does it feel like your skin needs a boost? Are you ready to look as young as you feel?
As people age, the signs of aging are often most prominent on their faces. Wrinkles and sagging skin are a natural part of aging, but they can still make you feel self-conscious about your appearance.
You can feel older than you are when you’re unsatisfied with how your face looks. A facelift can help you look and feel younger, inside and out!
If you’re considering cosmetic treatment to treat wrinkles and sagging skin on your face, a procedure like a facelift is a great option worth considering. Keep reading to discover why you’ll feel better inside and out after having a facelift!
What is a Facelift?
A rhytidectomy, more commonly called a facelift, is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess fat under the skin and redrapes the skin. By removing fat and repositioning the skin, the face’s overall appearance becomes smoother, reducing the appearance of sagging, drooping skin and helping the face look younger and more radiant.
Who Can Get a Facelift?
A facelift is for patients with sagging skin, especially the cheeks, jawline, and around the nose and corners of the mouth. You may also have a facelift performed with a neck lift to treat any skin on the neck that may be drooping or sagging.
To qualify for the cosmetic procedure, you must be in good health. Certain medical conditions may make it unsafe to undergo a facelift.
You cannot be a smoker before any procedures. Before having a facelift at Reflections at St. Luke’s, you must schedule a consultation with Dr. Nicolas Villanustre to determine if you’re a good candidate for the procedure.
Remember that a facelift is most effective for patients with skin elasticity and a well-defined bone structure. Losing skin elasticity causes your skin to sag.
As you get older, you’ll continue losing skin elasticity. It’s best to get a facelift while your skin still has some elasticity and can bounce back.
A facelift is best suited for patients with realistic expectations about what to expect from the cosmetic procedure. You also must be willing to follow all pre and post-operative instructions from Dr. Villanustre.
How is a Facelift Performed?
You will usually have a facelift performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Villanustre will create an incision along the hairline to begin the procedure.
If you get a full facelift, this incision may go around the entire hairline and under the ear. Dr. Villanustre will only need a small incision if you only undergo a partial facelift.
An incision under the chin is necessary for a neck lift. All incisions created are made to ensure the smallest amount of scarring possible and are hidden from view.
After creating the incision, Dr. Villanustre will carefully separate the skin from the layers of fat and muscle lying underneath it. He will remove any fat and then redrape the skin.
Redraping the skin “lifts” the face, enhancing its appearance. The incision is then sutured closed, permanently repositioning the skin into its desired place.
Undergoing a facelift can take between 3-6 hours to complete. A facelift at Reflections at St. Luke’s is a spa-like experience that exudes warmth and tranquility: before, during, and after your procedure.
Patients feel relaxed and cared for and leave knowing they have finally achieved their rejuvenation goals.
What is Recovery Like After Having a Facelift?
Once you’ve had a facelift, the next step is recovering from it. After the cosmetic procedure, you’ll need to go home and take it easy.
To begin, you’ll have your face fully bandaged for several days. Most patients can switch to a more comfortable elasticized facial sling on day three. You can usually have your stitches removed a week after your facelift.
During recovery, you will experience some swelling, bruising, and soreness. If you find yourself experiencing a great deal of discomfort, a doctor can prescribe pain medication.
You can also use ice to reduce swelling and feel more comfortable. Most patients find that if they follow all instructions from their doctor after their procedure, they heal well. Full recovery usually takes about 4-6 weeks.
